Check On Your Loved Ones

Apr 28, 2021

As summer approaches, it will become more apparent how many elderly live in homes that are not properly air conditioned. Extreme heat causes stroke, heat rashes, heat cramps, and exhaustion. The elderly can be much more susceptible to the dangers of extreme heat during the hot summer months. Because of this, decompositions are much more common this time of year. They could be more frequent due to the heat being a part of the cause of death, but the heat is also why they are discovered sooner.

Recently, we helped out when a veteran was found deceased in his home after a couple of weeks. With summer temperatures beings so high in the Poway area, the decomposing body progresses faster and can cause even more damage to the property itself. Carpet, vinyl flooring, and tow layers of subfloor all had to be removed when cleaning the home. Sometimes, in order to properly remove biohazards and bodily fluids, we have to remove flooring, walls, cabinets, etc. or the smell and hazards will continue to be present. Any smells that remain lingering in the air of the residence can be removed with our Ozone machine.

It is so disheartening to think about this veteran who fought and sacrificed for our country remaining undiscovered in his death for so long. Check on your friends and family you haven't heard from in a while-- especially the elderly. Summer months present a completely different set of dangers than the colder months. We should all be checking on our loved ones more often and making sure their air conditioners are working properly. Many elderly are too proud to call their families and admit they are living in the sweltering heat, either due to lack of funds to pay the higher bill, or because they aren't able to call the HVAC company to come fix their unit. Just like Bio-One Poway, your loved ones are just a phone call away!

Providing the healthiest environment for staff members, clients, and guests is essential to maintain productivity and profitability in the current pandemic. Working with a company that offers professional sanitizing services will produce the cleanest and healthiest workplace for you and your employees. This can reduce risks to you, your staff and members of the public who spend time in your facilities.

What Is the Difference Between Cleaning and Disinfecting for COVID-19?

Cleaning companies lack the expertise and the knowledge needed to eliminate bacteria and viruses from surfaces and working environments. At best, they may just move these microbes around in the various areas of your facility. At worst, your cleaning crew could transmit the virus as they work and could reduce the confidence of your staff and clients in your commitment to their health.

By contrast, companies that specialize in disinfecting services use approved industry standards to remove viruses, bacteria, and microbes effectively. This can eliminate issues arising from the current pandemic along with many other biological contaminants. Working with a firm that specializes in disinfecting services will also provide your staff members and clients with greater assurance that their health is of real importance to your company.

Protect Your Business From the Flu & Germs

Downtime due to illness can reduce your company's productivity to a significant degree. Investing in professional disinfecting services for your facilities can significantly reduce the risk of coronavirus along with the seasonal flu, colds and many other illnesses that can be transmitted in the working environment.

Benefits for All Types of Businesses

Regular disinfection by a company that specializes in these services can provide real benefits for a wide range of commercial and industrial enterprises.

•Professional disinfection is essential for restaurants so your employees and customers know you're going above and beyond to protect their health.

Commercial kitchens require constant attention to prevent the transmission of illnesses that could affect your staff and your customers.

Doctor's offices and medical facilities can be breeding grounds for various types of infections. Investing in professional disinfecting and sanitizing will promote the healthiest environment for patients and staff alike.

Gyms and workout centers require regular cleaning to protect the health of your patrons and to protect your reputation among current and potential customers.

Commercial office spaces can often be vectors for the transmission of illness.

Professional disinfecting on a regular basis is essential to keep these workspaces safe and to provide added assurance for your employees that their working environments are healthy and clean.

Manufacturing facilities rely on clean and healthful working environments to produce the products your customers need. Sanitizing your workspaces will help to prevent the spread of viral infections in your facility.

As California begins to allow businesses to reopen, it's more important than ever to protect your staff and customers from Covid-19. Keep reading to learn how long the virus survives on different surfaces and how to best sanitize your home or business.

How long does Covid-19 survive on surfaces?

According to a study published in the Virology Journal, Covid-19 can last on surfaces like phone screens, paper money, and stainless steel for up to 28 days. The study also found that the virus survived longer at lower temperatures and tended to last longer on non-porous or smooth surfaces, like glass and metal, as opposed to porous or rough surfaces, such as cotton.

At a temperature of 68 degrees Fahrenheit, which is about regular room temperature, the coronavirus could last for 28 days on smooth surfaces. The survival time was found to decrease as the temperature increased. The virus was not detectable on cotton after 14 days.

Other studies suggested that cold and damp environments, close working conditions, or noisy work environments that would cause people to shout and spread respiratory droplets were much more likely to have contaminated surfaces.

It is important to regularly wash your hands and disinfect surfaces, especially as we move through the colder winter months. In San Diego, we are seeing more businesses allowed to reopen and less restrictions on social gatherings. As a business owner, reopening and running your business is already enough of a workload! The extra cleaning protocols to regularly disinfect every surface of your commercial space can be daunting. Even with diligent cleaning on your part, there’s no way to ensure that you’ve completely eliminated the virus molecules.

Protect your loved ones at home, and protect your staff and customers at your place of business by having these areas sanitized with professional EPA-approved chemicals. We’re uniquely equipped to clean biological messes, and we’ve been continually providing COVID-19 cleanup services to the people of Poway, San Diego, and surrounding areas. Don’t take chances — Call today and ask about special pricing on Covid-19 sanitation services! (858) 261-4527

Suicide does not have one single cause. Certain factors like substance abuse and untreated depression can lead to higher risk of suicide just as having a trusted group of friends can help protect you. Read more about the warning signs of suicide, risk factors and protective factors of suicide.

  • Someone threatening to hurt or kill him/herself or talking about wanting to die. Especially if the person has a weapon or item to hurt himself/herself.
  • Searching for ways to kill him/herself by seeking access to lethal means-whether that is online or physically in the moment of despair.
  • Someone talking, writing, or posting on social media about death and suicide when these actions are out of the ordinary for the person.

The warning signs of suicide are indicators that a person may be in acute danger and may urgently need help.

  • Talking about wanting to die or to kill oneself;
  • Looking for a way to kill oneself;
  • Talking about feeling hopeless or having no purpose;
  • Talking about feeling trapped or being in unbearable pain;
  • Talking about being a burden to others;
  • Increasing the use of alcohol or drugs;
  • Acting anxious, agitated, or reckless;
  • Sleeping too little or too much;
  • Withdrawing or feeling isolated;
  • Showing rage or talking about seeking revenge; and
  • Displaying extreme mood swings.

If you notice a sudden sense of calm and happiness in someone after them being extremely depressed, that can mean the decision has been made to attempt suicide. If you see the warning signs, you need to SPEAK UP. But what if you're wrong? What if they get angry?  Yes, the conversation will be difficult and uncomfortable, but it could save a life.

“I have been feeling concerned about you lately.”

"Recently, I have noticed some differences in you and wondered how you are doing.”

"I wanted to check in with you because you haven’t seemed yourself lately."

You'll find more helpful information and resources about suicide prevention on the Suicide Awareness Voices of Education website.

The year 2020 has been a year like no other, presenting all kinds of new obstacles and challenges, and forcing us to get creative and adjust to many new protocols and lifestyle changes to prevent the spread of Covid-19. The main change we've been asked to make is to social distance. Remaining separated from loved ones has been difficult on everyone, especially with the holidays coming up. Here are the guidelines posted by San Diego County regarding Thanksgiving celebrations:

"To minimize the spread of COVID-19 and keep families safe during Thanksgiving, the County of San Diego offers guidance for common activities:

  • Remote events with family and friends, such as a virtual Thanksgiving dinner, sharing recipes, a virtual turkey trot, or online game.
  • Televised or live streaming events at home with members of your own household.
  • Outdoor orchards, food markets, and seasonal craft fairs where state guidance is followed and people use hand sanitizer, wear face coverings, and maintain a 6-foot distance from others.
  • Get your flu vaccine to protect yourself and minimize complications from the flu or COVID-19 viruses.

Not Recommended

  • According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) travel considerations, traveling increases the chance of getting and spreading COVID-19. Staying home is the best way to protect yourself and others.
  • In-person sports events, parades, and movies where more than 3 households are present.
  • In-person Black Friday or other shopping events where there may be large gatherings of people.

Not Allowed

  • Under California Department of Public Health guidance, in-person events or parties with more than 3 households are not permitted, even if outdoors. Remember, the smaller the number of people, the safer.
  • Carnivals, festivals, and live entertainment are not allowed because close interactions increase the risk of infection.
  • In-person turkey trots or similar events are not allowed because participants need to walk or run close together, and it is difficult to maintain physical distancing.

Safer Alternatives

Many traditional Thanksgiving activities can be high-risk for spreading viruses. There are safer, alternative ways to celebrate and include the following:

  • Consider virtual connections through video calls or video-sharing, such as sending a pre-made Thanksgiving dinner or ingredients through online food delivery services and eat together virtually.
  • Shop online rather than in person for Black Friday deals.
  • Donate food to charities at drive-through mobile pantries, or through an online food bank fundraiser.
  • Celebrate Green Friday by visiting a local park or preserve for family-friendly activities.
  • Visit pick-your-own produce farms that follow California Department of Food and Agriculture guidelines."

While the safest way to enjoy Thanksgiving this year is to not gather at all, there will still be circumstances where families choose to celebrate together. We highly recommend getting a Covid test and attending only after getting a negative result and quarantine from the time of your test until the gathering. We also recommend that you have your home professionally sanitized by a company like Bio-One to make sure that there are no lingering bacteria to be picked up by your otherwise healthy guests, especially if you have elderly family members attending your gathering. Give us a call for a free estimate today! (858) 261-4527

We are so thankful to be a part of this wonderful community, and we wish everyone a safe and healthy holiday season! Happy Thanksgiving!

Concern about indoor exposure to mold has been increasing as the public becomes aware that exposure to mold can cause a variety of health effects and symptoms, including allergic reactions. Mold can be found almost anywhere. It can grow on virtually any organic substance as long as moisture and oxygen are present. There are types of mold that can grow on wood, paper, carpet, foods, and insulation. When excessive moisture accumulates in buildings or on building materials, mold growth will often occur, particularly if the moisture problems remains undiscovered or unaddressed.

Since mold requires water to grow, it is important to prevent moisture problems in buildings. Moisture problems can have many causes, including uncontrolled humidity. Some moisture problems in buildings have been linked to changes in building construction practices during the 1970s, 80s, and 90s. Some of these changes have resulted in buildings that are tightly sealed, but may lack adequate ventilation, potentially leading to moisture buildup. Building materials, such as drywall, may not allow moisture to escape easily. Moisture problems may include roof leaks, landscaping or gutters that direct water into or under the building, and unvented combustion appliances. delayed or insufficient maintenance are also associated with moisture problems in schools and large buildings. Moisture problems in portable classrooms and other temporary structures have frequently been associated with mold problems.

When it comes to mold problems, prevention is very important. There are a few ways you can prevent mold in your buildings:

  • Fix leaky plumbing and leaks in the building envelope as soon as possible.
  • Watch for condensation and wet spots. Fix sources of moisture problems as soon as possible.
  • Prevent moisture due to compensation by increasing surface temperature through insulating or increasing air circulation, or reducing humidity in the air through repairing leaks or increasing ventilation.
  • Keep heating, ventilation, and air conditioning drip pans clean, flowing properly, and unobstructed.
  • Vent moisture-generating appliances, such as dryers, to the outside where possible.
  • Maintain low indoor humidity.
  • Perform regular building and HVAC inspections and maintenance as scheduled.
  • Clean and dry any wet or damp spots within 48 hours.
  • Don't let foundations stay wet. Provide drainage and slope the grout away from the foundation.

While prevention is important, mold issues can still occur and water sources can quickly result in the mold infestation fo homes and businesses. Hiring a professional mold removal company is crucial. Bio-One technicians quickly stop and remove the fungus that occurs naturally in areas subjected to humidity, condensation, water leaks, and insufficient ventilation. Using state-of-the-art safety equipment, Bio-One technicians properly block off areas infested with mold and discard any household or business items that have been highly contaminated, whether that entails tearing out or reconstructing areas or less thorough mold removal procedures. Inadequate removal of mold spores can lead to health risks that include respiratory complications, skin irritation, and severe allergic reactions.
